What You Need to Know About Dental Bridges

Many people will need to have a dental bridge put in at some point in their lives. This is a dental procedure that is fairly common and can provide several benefits. The following are 3 facts everyone should know about dental bridges.

1. What Are Dental Bridges?

A bridge is made up of a false tooth or false teeth. The false teeth are then connected on both sides by crowns. The crowns are put on the two anchoring teeth that are on both sides of the bridge. The two teeth that are anchors are called the abutment teeth. Bridges are usually made from metal, porcelain, or sometimes a combination of these materials. Sometimes they are even made from gold or alloys.

2. Who Needs Dental Bridges?

Bridges are often recommended for individuals who are missing one or more teeth. Filling in the gaps between teeth with a bridge provides several benefits. A bridge can improve an individual’s smile and boost self-confidence. They can also help a person chew better and more easily enjoy their food. If a bridge is not put in place of missing teeth it’s possible that the surrounding teeth may shift into the empty space. If a person is missing several teeth having a bridge may even help maintain the overall shape of the person’s face.

3. How Does the Process Work?

During the initial visit, the teeth on both sides of where the bridge will be are prepared to receive crowns. An impression of the teeth is then made. The impressions will be a model to make the bridge and crowns, which will be made in a dental laboratory. The dentist will then create a temporary bridge to protect any exposed teeth while waiting for the permanent bridge to be made. When a patient comes in for the second visit the temporary bridge is taken out. The permanent bridge is put in and adjusted where necessary. The dentist may put the bridge in using temporary cement so the patient can wear it for a few weeks to make sure the fit is correct. A few weeks later the bridge will be permanently sealed into place.

After a bridge has been put in it’s important to clean all around and under the bridge. Sometimes dental implants are used along with a bridge if a person has several teeth that are missing. Make sure to contact your dentist for more information about dental bridges.
