Periodontics

According to the Journal of Dental Research, nearly half of adults in the United States age 30 or older have some degree of gingivitis, irritation, and inflammation of the soft tissue (gums), or periodontitis, inflammation affecting the bone and tissue of the teeth themselves.

Caused by bacteria that grow in the mouth, these two periodontal diseases are relatively easy to prevent and treat at home with proper daily brushing and flossing. Left untreated, gum disease can progress into tooth or bone loss and other serious health issues.

Causes of Gum Disease

There are about 200-300 different strains of bacteria in your mouth, most of them being necessary and beneficial. Only a few of the strains cause tooth decay or periodontal disease. Bacteria love warm, moist places, so your mouth can be a perfect breeding ground, particularly if you do not keep your teeth, tongue, and gums clean.

Some dental patients may have a genetic predisposition to periodontal disease, but for the most part, causes of gum disease can be reduced or avoided. Some of the most common causes seen by periodontists include:

  • Smoking
  • Poor nutrition
  • Stress
  • Hormonal changes (young females)
  • Compromised immune system
  • Certain medications

Other Health Concerns

The prevention or treatment of gingivitis or periodontitis is about much more than maintaining strong, healthy teeth. The bacteria associated with periodontal disease can also influence:

  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Dementia
  • Pregnancy complications
