Toothaches can mean sharp pain, throbbing, swelling and even fever or headache. Regardless of what form they take, what they all have in common is that they are quite unpleasant. While adults are more likely to suffer them, toothaches are not unheard of in children. There are some common reasons for tooth pain that can affect children.
One of the most common reason for a child’s toothache is tooth decay. Sugary foods, not brushing frequently enough, failure to floss, not eating enough vegetables and a number of other factors can contribute to decay. That decay, in turn, can result in cavities. The sooner this sort of situation is addressed, the better the outcome.
Another possible cause of a child’s toothache is an abscessed tooth. This often comes from tooth decay. However, it can come about through other ways such as trauma to the tooth. For instance, a child who is involved in sports who has gotten hit in the mouth with a ball might suffer a broken tooth that becomes abscessed. With abscess, there are often other symptoms such as foul breath, sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages, pain when chewing, fever, red and swollen gums, swollen neck glands and a swollen jaw.
A third common cause of toothache in children is repetitive motion. This can be a problem for those who are hardcore gum chewers. It can also be a problem for chronic teeth grinders. In the case of those who grind their teeth, this is typically an indicator of anxiety issues. In addition to addressing the dental and other health issues posed by this behavior, the behavior itself will need to be addressed. Until the cause of the anxiety is addressed, the teeth grinding will continue and will lead to repeat issues with tooth pain, headaches and other health issues.
