Tooth Extractions

Looking for someone to perform a tooth extraction in Salt Lake City? Visit South Temple Dental. Tooth extraction is a very common dental procedure, and there are many reasons you might need to have a tooth pulled. These include:

  • Damage to a tooth due to trauma or decay that can’t be repaired
  • Baby teeth that don’t fall out
  • Tooth infection or risk of infection
  • Gum disease
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Create room for other teeth

Usually, a tooth that is damaged or infected can be treated in two ways. If the tooth is salvageable, we’ll perform a root canal to clean out the infection. Extraction is recommended if the tooth is too far decayed for a root canal and will create further damage if not removed.

In the cases where extraction is necessary, Dr. Spencer T. Updike will perform an extraction. However, in complex cases, patients will be referred to an oral surgeon for extraction.

What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction

On the day of your procedure, we’ll obtain a full medical and dental history and ask about any medications you’re taking. We want to ensure you’re in good physical health prior to extraction.

For a simple extraction, we will numb the area surrounding your tooth with a local anesthetic. This way you won’t feel any pain during your procedure, just pressure. If at any time you feel pain, let us know and we’ll numb the area again.

Once the area is numb, we’ll start rocking the affected tooth back and forth using an elevator tool. This rocking motion will help loosen the tooth from the gums and prepare it for extraction. It’s common during this point of the procedure to feel a lot of pressure. We’ll then use forceps to remove the tooth.

After the tooth has been removed, it’s common to experience a little bleeding over the next day or so. You’ll also experience some pain and soreness on the extraction site for a few days. You may be prescribed some pain medication to help you manage it.

The extraction site will close up in two weeks, though it takes several months for the bone and soft tissue to regrow.
