What Is the Process for Getting a Composite Resin Filling?

If you’ve never gotten a filling before, you might feel a little apprehensive about the process. After all, it’s not something you’re familiar with yet. Fortunately, it’s actually fairly simple and straightforward. All it takes is some prep work, the application and setting of the composite resin, and some finishing touches.

The Prep

To get a composite resin filling that blends in with the other teeth, Dr. Updike will pick a shade of resin that matches your natural teeth. Your mouth will be prepped for the filling with a local anesthetic so you won’t feel anything during the procedure.

In order for a composite resin filling to be successfully placed, the tooth itself must first be prepared. Dr. Updike will first remove any decay and shape the cavity. The surfaces where the filling will contact the tooth will be etched and rinsed to promote better bonding. Then a bond layer will be applied to help the resin stick to the tooth better. That layer is then set with a blue light.

The Filling

Composite resin fillings are applied in layers. The filling will be built up layer by layer. Each layer will be set with a blue light, just like the bond layer. It takes a matter of seconds for the light to set a layer of composite resin. At this point, the tooth with the filling won’t look quite like how it used to. That’s where the finishing touches come in.

The Finishing Touches

Once the cavity has been completely filled with the composite resin, it’s time to make sure it looks like a proper tooth, rather than simply being the color of one. Dr. Updike will spend some time shaping and contouring the tooth and filling so at the end of the procedure it looks just like a normal tooth. It will then be polished and finished so it’s shiny and beautiful, just like the rest of the teeth around it.

People who want a filling without looking like they got a filling can rely on composite resin fillings to get the job done. These fillings can be made to look indistinguishable from the rest of the natural tooth and the teeth surrounding it. Because of their natural appearance, Dr. Updike uses composite resin for all of the fillings done at South Temple Dental. We just know you’re going to love the way your teeth look with a composite resin filling.

Fillings are usually completed in a separate appointment so there is ample time to do a quality job. Click here to get your filling scheduled at South Temple Dental today.

 Gum Contouring
02 May, 2024
Many people dream of having a perfect smile. Beyond straight, white teeth, the shape and health of one's gums play a crucial role in achieving this. Gum contouring is a cosmetic procedure that has gained popularity for its ability to reshape the gum line, remove excess tissue to reveal more of the teeth, or make the gum line more uniform. This procedure not only enhances the aesthetics of a smile but also contributes to oral health by removing places where bacteria can hide, potentially reducing the risk of gum diseases. It's an option worth considering for those looking to improve their smile's appearance and boost their confidence.
