Prevention for Gum Disease and Periodontal Disease Treatment in Utah

Do you know what periodontitis is? It’s a gum infection that can cause serious damage to the soft tissue and the bones in your mouth. Having this disease can lead to loose or dying teeth. Periodontitis usually is the result of an extreme buildup of bacteria on the gums and teeth.

If you think you have or have been diagnosed with periodontal disease we have some tips for preventing gum disease and possibly periodontal disease treatments located in Utah that can help you.

Tips on Preventing Gum Disease:

  • Brushing your teeth at least twice a day
  • Replacing your toothbrush every three to four months (soft bristles are more gentle on your gums)
  • Flossing daily
  • Mouth rinse may help reduce plaque between teeth
  • Getting regular dental cleanings from a professional. The frequency of visits should be recommended by your dentist
  • Don’t smoke or chew tobacco

These are some simple steps that everyone should follow so you can use to prevent future gum disease issues.

If you have been diagnosed with a periodontal disease here are some things that would be nice to know before you start your procedure.

What to Expect Before Your Periodontal Disease Treatment in Utah

When a dentist or dental hygienist is treating you they will want to thoroughly clean the crevices and around the teeth to prevent further damage to gums or bones.

There are surgical and nonsurgical treatments. Depending on how far the disease has progressed you may be able to opt for the nonsurgical option. This follows 3 steps,

  1. Scaling: this is when they remove the tartar and bacteria from your teeth and beneath your gums. This can be done with dental tools or laser dentistry
  2. Root planing: this smoothes the root of the tooth and discourages more buildup of tartar and bacteria
  3. Antibiotics: Lastly topical or oral antibiotics are given to help control the bacterial infection. Topical antibiotics can come in forms of mouth rinses or gels

Surgical treatments can include:

  1. Soft tissue grafts: This is done by removing a small amount of tissue from the roof of your mouth and attaching it to the affected area.
  2. Bone grafting: This is performed when the disease has destroyed the bone surrounding the root of your tooth. The graft can be made up of small fragments of bone from you or synthetic material. Which is then placed where the damaged has occurred on the tooth
  3. Tissue-stimulating proteins: This last method include a special gel to the infected tooth root. The gel has some proteins that are found in developing tooth enamel and stimulates tooth growth.

There are many more types of periodontal disease treatments out there but these are a few your dentist might use.
