Who Is a Good Candidate for Veneers?

Have you ever looked at a celebrity’s teeth when they’ve smiled and wondered how their teeth could be so perfectly straight, white, and perfectly shaped? You might think it’s all to do with braces and whiteners, and, for some, that may be the case. For others like Tom Cruise, Miley Cirus, Hillary Duff, Morgan Freeman, Celine Dion, and more, the secret is veneers. Veneers can be a great option for some people who want a perfect smile, but it’s not for everyone. So what makes someone a good candidate?

Cosmetic Issues and Severe Staining

Do your teeth not look quite the way you’d like them to? Maybe they’re a little misshapen or have some cracks or chips. Maybe you have multiple cosmetic issues you’d like to see addressed, including severe staining. While various dental procedures can often be used quite effectively to address these and other issues, veneers make it possible to address most of them at once, if not all of them, and to create a natural appearance.

Good Oral Health

One of the tricky things about veneers is that, although they can be used to address all sorts of cosmetic problems, you still have to be in good oral health. Your gums and teeth must be in good health, to begin with. If not, you’ll need to have that addressed before pursuing veneers. Your enamel must be thick enough for the veneers to bond strongly to the teeth as well. A thin layer of it must be filed away to make room for the enamel. If there isn’t enough left, the veneer can’t bond to the tooth properly.

No Grinding or Clenching

Veneers are made from porcelain. While porcelain is a fairly strong material, it’s not going to hold up well if you grind your teeth or clench your jaw. That sort of pressure isn’t what they’re designed to hold up against. If you do either of these things, you may need to find ways to prevent that from happening for veneers to be a good option for you.

If you’ve ever wanted a brilliantly white smile with perfectly shaped teeth, veneers may be worth considering. They cover your teeth a bit like how a fake nail does for fingernails and allow the dentist to mold them into the perfect shape for your face and smile. Talk to your dentist to see if you’re a good candidate for veneers.
